Making the Connection: Strong Families, Strong Businesses, Strong Communities

Virtual Zoom

How do we ensure that children have a safe, stable, nurturing environment in which to grow? One strategy is engaging communities to support family-friendly policy and practice changes. Family-friendly workplaces and a family-friendly society are good for children, parents, and elders; they are in the best interest of employers; and, in the long run, they benefit all communities. Based on the latest research and strategies for preventing child abuse and neglect, this training will raise awareness and understanding about the connections between preventing and mitigating adverse childhood experiences, which lead to stronger families and stronger businesses. Specific examples of actions that can be taken will be provided. NOTE: This training is not approved for KDHE child care licensing hours, but approval is pending. Certificates of attendance will be provided to all participants.

Adverse Childhood Experiences

Virtual Zoom

Children who grow up in safe, stable, nurturing relationships and environments that foster hope and resilience are better prepared for lifelong health and well-being. The 1998 landmark Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) Study demonstrated that many adults recall experiences - including abuse, neglect, substance abuse, and areas of household dysfunction - that led to lifelong poor physical and emotional health. While ACEs are important, an exclusive focus on adverse experiences risks labeling children and their families, and it neglects to turn attention toward the possibility for flourishing even in the face of adversity (Sege, R). Participants of this training will learn about the ACEs research including the impact on social connections, school readiness and the likelihood of developing negative health behaviors, learn about the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention framework being implemented to prevent ACEs called Essentials for Childhood: Safe, Stable, and Nurturing Relationships and Environments; and brainstorm concrete ways to cultivate relationships and environments that create a positive impact for children and families in our communities. This training is approved by KDHE for 1.0 child care licensing hours.

Special Event: Mandated Reporting through a Trauma-Responsive and Racial Justice Lens

Virtual Zoom

Mandated reporting is a professional responsibility for all helping professionals. Despite our best intentions, and our belief in evidence-based practice, mandated reporting remains one of the few areas in which professionals do not regularly examine best practices or look beyond their perceived legal and ethical obligations. How do we incorporate all that we know about trauma, racial disproportionality in child welfare, the importance of relationships, and ethical, evidence-based practice into our legal duty as mandated reporters? In this training, professionals will learn alternatives to mandated reporting that can prevent child maltreatment, promote family preservation, and maintain client engagement. Participants will be asked to take a critical eye to the legal and ethical implications of the decision to report and consider ways in which these decisions have impact for families, and for our professions, beyond the reporting call. Presenters are from the Institute to Transform Child Protection, www.transformchildprotection.org. This training is NOT preapproved for KDHE child care licensing hours. Certificates of attendance will be provided.
